On March 1, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted, 2 to 1, to block a new Internet privacy rule from taking effect. The rule would have required Internet service providers to take stronger steps to protect consumers’ personal data. It was part of a larger set of broadband privacy rules approved by the FCC in October under the Obama Administration and scheduled to take effect the following day. The privacy rule called for broadband providers to take “reasonable” measures to ensure the security of the customers’ data.
