The University of Texas at Austin, founded in 1883, is the flagship public university for the State of Texas. In August 2004, in order to increase the diversity of its student body, the university began considering race as one of a number of factors — including test scores, essays, grades, awards, and work experience — when determining whether to grant admittance to in-State applicants who did not graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school class.
