Senator Leahy was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1974. He served as Vermont State’s Attorney in Chittenden County from 1966 to 1974. He was a practicing attorney from 1964 to 1974. He serves on the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee, the Appropriations Committee, and the Judiciary Committee, where he is the Ranking Minority Member.
