In 1994, the State of Maryland created a statewide DNA database for law enforcement purposes. In 2002, Maryland mandated the warrantless collection of DNA samples from anyone convicted of a felony. In 2008, the State expanded the law to require DNA samples from anyone arrested for serious crimes. On April 10, 2009, Alonzo Jay King, Jr. was arrested for first- and second-degree assault. The State took a DNA sample from an inner-cheek swab, which it then submitted to a national DNA database of open criminal cases.
