Recent Action on the .08 BAC Standard
On May 18, the Senate and House reached a compromise agreement on major provisions of the largest surface transportation bill in history. Known in the Senate as ISTEA (the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act, or S. 1173) and in the House as BESTEA (the Building Efficient Surface Transportation and Equity Act, or H.R. 2400), the legislation includes a 40 percent increase in funding for highway and mass transit spending over the next six years as compared to the previous authorization.
