Chronology of Ebola Outbreaks Outside of the United States

1976 — Outbreak in Yambuku in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC, formerly known as Zaier)and surrounding area. Disease was spread by close personal contact and by use of contaminated needles and syringes in hospitals and clinics. It was the first recognition of the disease. Outbreak in Nzara, Maridi, and the surrounding area of Sudan. Disease was spread mainly through close personal contact within hospitals. A laboratory infection occurred by accidental stick of contaminated needle. 1979 — Outbreak in Nzara, Maridi, Sudan. 1989 to 1990 — Virus was introduced into quarantine facilities in Virginia and Pennsylvania by monkeys imported…
