She, along with seven other area residents, refused to sell her property to the City of New London to make way for development related to the newly constructed nearby multimillion-dollar research facility of the drug company Pfizer. In November 2000, New London initiated eminent domain condemnation proceedings against the residents in an attempt to force them to vacate their homes.
