The District of Columbia’s criminal trespass statute, D.C. Code Section 22-3302, says in part that “any person who, without lawful authority, shall enter or attempt to enter, any public or private dwelling, building or other property … shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor.” In the early hours of March 15, 2008, Washington, D.C., police charged a group of individuals under this statute after detaining them at an unauthorized party in a private house.
