Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides have been linked to a variety of health and environmental concerns, and carbon dioxide has been linked to global warming. For example, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides contribute to the formation of fine particles, and nitrogen oxides contribute to the formation of ozone. Both fine particles and ozone have been linked to respiratory illnesses. For example, fine particles have been linked to premature death, aggravated asthma, and chronic bronchitis, while ozone can inflame lung tissue and increase susceptibility to bronchitis and pneumonia.
