Recent Action on Clean Air Initiatives
The 107th Congress (2001_2002) did not pass major legislation amending the Clean Air Act. The comprehensive energy bill, H.R. 4, which died in conference at the end of the second session, came closest. The Senate version would have banned the use of the gasoline additive MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), eliminated the requirement to use MTBE or other oxygenates in reformulated gasoline, and required that motor vehicle fuel contain ethanol or other renewable fuels.
