Since 1976, the Supreme Court’s decision in Buckley v. Valeo has governed the way candidates for political office finance their campaigns in both State and Federal elections. In that landmark case, the Court considered the constitutionality of a 1974 amendment to the 1971 Federal Election Campaign Act, which fixed the amount of money candidates could raise and spend during a campaign.
