The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was established by United Nations Security Council Resolution 827, passed on May 25, 1993, in order to prosecute serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in the territory of the former Yugoslavia since 1991. It has indicted a total of 85 individuals and has sentenced 20 so far. Slobodan Milosevic, former president of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, was indicted on 66 separate counts of various war crimes relating to his activities in Kosovo, Croatia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
