Despite having only one registered firearm retailer in the entire country, Mexico has a gun violence epidemic. According to the United Nations, the nation had 22,355 gun homicides in 2023, the most in the world. By comparison, the United States had 15,186 gun homicides in the same year, second-most in the world, despite having 206 million more people. The Mexican government attributes the high rate of gun deaths to the 200,000 firearms that it estimates are manufactured in the United States and illegally smuggled across the border, where they often are used by drug cartels.
