On March 23, 2010, President Barack Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), which put into place comprehensive health insurance reforms that would be implemented over four years and beyond, with most of the changes taking place in 2014. Among the key components of the law were expanded coverage for name-brand drugs under Medicare, the extension of health insurance for young adults under their parents’ policies, small business tax credits, mandatory coverage of pre-existing conditions, no lifetime caps on the amount of coverage, and expansion of the Medicaid program for the poor.
