Representative Ehlers, of the Third District of Michigan, was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1993. A former research physicist, he conducted scientific research at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, where he was a NATO Post-Doctoral Research Fellow. He then spent six years at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and as Lecturer in physics at the University of California at Berkeley.
