Creation of Dolly the Sheep

First, let me briefly summarize the experiments that my colleagues and I at the Roslin Institute and PPL Therapeutics reported. Individual cells were taken from the mammary gland of an adult sheep and cultured in the laboratory in conditions that allowed the cells to multiply many times. Nuclei from a few of these cells were then transferred to unfertilized sheep eggs from which the original nucleus from the adult animal — were then transferred to surrogate mothers using techniques similar to those used for in vitro fertilization in humans.
