In his 1954 book Seduction of the Innocent, renowned psychologist Dr. Fredrick Wertham asserted that comic books cause delinquent and depraved behavior among juveniles, citing as an example the "subtle atmosphere of homoeroticism which pervades the adventures of the mature Batman and his friend Robin." The Senate promptly held hearings and recommended self-policing by the comics publishers, with a warning that Congress might be forced to revisit the issue and do whatever was necessary to "prevent our nation’s young from being harmed from crime and horror comic books."
