In September 2008, TransCanada Corp. applied for a permit with the U.S. State Department to build and operate a Keystone XL Pipeline that would carry crude oil produced from the oil sands region of Alberta, Canada, to oil refineries in the Midwest and along the Texas Gulf Coast. The authorization is required pursuant to an Executive order that covers the issuance of presidential permits with respect to energy-related facilities and international land transportation crossings.
