Senator Markey was elected to the U.S. Senate in a January 25, 2013, special election to serve out the balance of Senator John Kerry’s term when Senator Kerry was appointed U.S. Secretary of State. He served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1973 to 1976 and in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1976 to 2013.
