The battle for LGBTQ equality is one of the fastest moving civil rights debates in American history. In 2010, only 40% of Americans supported gay marriage, according to a Gallup poll. A decade later support has risen to 70% and gay marriage had been made the law of the land by the Supreme Court. As more Americans identify as LGBTQ and there are more portrayals of LGBTQ characters in popular culture, public opinion has evolved rapidly. Democrats have sought to capitalize on this evolution by enshrining civil rights for LGBTQ Americans in the Civil Rights Act. …
