In 1963, Henry Montgomery was convicted of murdering Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Deputy Sheriff Charles Hurt, for which he received an automatic death sentence. At the time of his arrest, Montgomery was a 17-year-old high school junior. In 1966, the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled his jury was biased and overturned his conviction. In a new trial in 1969, Montgomery was again convicted and received a sentence of life in prison without parole. Montgomery spent the next 43 years in prison without incident.
