The Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (Mine Act), as amended, requires the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to perform inspections of each underground coal mine in its entirety at least four times per year. MSHA’s primary means to comply with this statutory requirement is to conduct regular safety and health inspections. The Office of Inspector General (OIG) conducted a performance audit of the underground coal mine inspection process performed by MSHA’s Office of Coal Mine Safety and Health (CMS&H).
