The Department of Education was created in 1980 by combining offices from several Federal agencies. Its mission is to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access. Margaret Spellings was sworn in as Education Secretary in January 2005. She previously served in the George W. Bush Administration as Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, in which capacity she helped create the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. Before that she was a Senior Advisor to then Texas Governor George W. Bush with responsibility for developing and implementing education reforms and policies….
