The Republic of Korea was founded in 1948 in the post-World War II division of the Korean peninsula into American and Soviet spheres of influence. It was separated from North Korea by a demilitarized zone following the Korean War, which ended in an armistice without a permanent peace treaty. There has been progress toward normalized relations between the two nations and a permanent settlement, including the first inter-Korean summit in June 2000.
