Foreword
Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) in 1938 to eliminate "labor conditions detrimental to the maintenance of the minimum standards of living necessary for the health, efficiency, and well-being of workers." The landmark labor law ushered in the 40-hour work week and mandatory time-and-a-half pay for every hour worked over that limit. The FLSA has been amended since then to expand the classes of workers covered and raise the minimum wage and overtime payments.
