The American Medical Association was founded in 1847 by a group of physicians concerned about advancing the quality of medical education, science, and practice. Its work includes the development and promotion of standards in medical practice, research, and education; advocacy on behalf of patients and physicians; and the provision of accurate, timely information and discourse on matters important to the health of America. AMA policy is set by members through its democratic forum, the AMA House of Delegates.
