John A. Kitzhaber, M.D., Governor, Democrat
John Kitzhaber has been Governor of Oregon since 1995. He previously served one term in the Oregon House of Representatives (1978 to 1980) and three terms in the Oregon Senate (1980 to 1994), during which time he authored the Oregon Health Plan. He was also President of the Senate from 1985 to 1993. As a physician, he serves on the faculty of the Estes Part Institute, where he has been a Clinical Professor at Oregon Health Sciences University since 1989.
