Senator Coats was appointed to the U.S. Senate in December 1988 to fill the vacancy caused by the election of Senator Dan Quayle as Vice President. He was elected in a 1990 special election, and served until 1999. He was again elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010. He sits on the Finance Committee and the Select Intelligence Committee and chairs the Joint Economic Committee.
