The Long-Serving Retired Justice’s Career and Legacy

Retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States John Paul Stevens died on July 16 at Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, of complications following a stroke he suffered the prior day. He passed away peacefully with his daughters by his side. He was 99 years old. Justice Stevens was appointed to the Court by President Gerald Ford in 1975. He retired in 2010 after serving more than 34 years on the Court.
