Iran waged a war against Iraq from 1980 to 1988 in which an estimated 1.5 million people died. The nation is ruled by a Shiite theocracy, a sect of Islam that is the majority religion in Iraq, as well. Kamal Kharrazi was appointed as Iran’s Foreign Minister and representative to the UN in 1989.
