Overview of Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) provides guidelines for access to and release of education records to parents, students, and third parties, while protecting the privacy of student records. Educational institutions receiving Federal education funding must provide parents with access to their child’s records and, except in limited circumstances, must seek consent from the parents before any information is released to third parties.
