Grades are a touchy subject for many students. For some, poor marks can be a source of embarrassment and teasing from classmates. On a broader level, the public release of academic transcripts and other school records can expose private information to unwanted eyes.To address this perceived problem, Congress, in 1974, passed the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which requires parental or student approval for a school or university to release a variety of academic information.
