On July 29, 1994, seven-year-old Megan Kanka was abducted from her New Jersey home by a neighbor who unbeknownst to Megan’s parents had twice served prison sentences for sexually assaulting a child. Megan’s body was found two days later in a nearby park.The crime generated national outrage at the danger posed by repeat sex offenders. In October 1994, New Jersey passed a series of bills known as "Megan’s law," which required that the public be kept informed of the presence of registered sex offenders in the State.
