Meredith attempted to enroll her son, Joshua Ryan McDonald, into kindergarten at Breckinridge-Franklin Elementary, near her home in Lexington, Kentucky. Because of the timing of her request and the Jefferson County School District’s student assignment plan to maintain racial balance in its schools, Joshua was instead sent to an elementary school farther away from his home.
