Since 1978, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has used a five-star rating system to determine how well vehicles protect occupants in front, side, and rollover crashes. That system has come under criticism in recent years following a study revealing that nearly all vehicles were awarded four or five stars, even some that were later recalled for safety defects. Now NHTSA has announced that the rating system will be revised to consider vehicle safety technologies that are becoming more prevalent — including systems to prevent rear-end crashes, improve night visility, and detect blind spots.
