The American Legion was the original owner the Peace Cross of Bladensberg, which was erected in 1925. The Legion gave the land and the cross to the State of Maryland in 1961, although it secured continuing rights to conduct ceremonies on the land. The American Legion, the American Legion Department of Maryland, and the American Legion Colmar Manor Post 13 joined the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission as co-defendants in the 2014 lawsuit alleging a violation of the Establishment Clause to protect their interests in the memorial.
