The City of Kansas City, Missouri, and a group of grassroots activists founded KCMC in 1970 under a grant from the Model Cities program. KCMC went on to become the first not-for-profit in Jackson County to sponsor family child care homes in the Federal Child and Adult Care Food program. In 1977, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services selected KCMC to be the Head Start grantee for Kansas City. Dwayne A.
