Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits an employer from discriminating against any individual with respect to hiring or the terms and conditions of employment because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Title VII applies to a broad range of employment practices, including discrimination because of sex in hiring, placement, promotion, demotion, transfer, termination, and discipline. Because the statute prohibits sex discrimination with respect to all terms and conditions of employment, discrimination regarding salary, leave, and other benefits may also violate the Act.
