In 2012, the New Jersey Legislature voted to legalize sports betting at government-licensed casinos and racetracks in an effort to prop up the State’s ailing gaming industry. A group of professional sports leagues and the National Collegiate Athletic Association challenged the move in Federal court, arguing that the New Jersey law violated the Federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), which prohibits States from taking action to legalize sports betting.
