The gaming industry in New Jersey is in trouble. Atlantic City, which used to be a major mid-Atlantic tourist destination, has fallen on economic hard times. Its boardwalk of casinos has become a victim of newer, flashier competition from Indian reservations and legalized gambling in neighboring States. In 2012, policymakers in New Jersey had an idea — permitting betting on professional and amateur sporting events. At the time, the practice was only fully legal in Nevada, while several other States offered sports-related lottery games.
