EPA was created in 1970 to permit coordinated and effective governmental action on behalf of the environment. The agency’s mission is to control and abate pollution in the areas of air, water, solid waste, pesticides, radiation, and toxic substances. Its mandate is to mount an integrated, coordinated attack on environmental pollution in cooperation with State and local governments. Administrator Browner was appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993. From 1991 to 1993, she was the Secretary of Florida’s Department of Environmental Regulation.
