Syria has been a member of the United Nations (UN) since October 24, 1945. Bashar al-Assad has served as president of Syria and regional secretary of the Ba’ath Party since 2000. He assumed office following the death of his father, Hafez al-Assad, who had served as leader of Syria for 29 years.
