The 2008 presidential election is notable for a number of reasons. It is the first time in U.S. history that a major party has chosen an African American (Illinois Senator Barack Obama) as its nominee, and the first time that the Republican Party has named a woman (Alaska Governor Sarah Palin) to run as Vice President. It is also the first time that two sitting senators will run against each other in a presidential race.
