The President and Vice President of the United States are chosen indirectly by a group of persons elected by American voters. These officials are known as electors, and the institution is referred to collectively as the Electoral College. Established in 1787 as one of several compromises in the Constitution, the Electoral College and an array of subsequent Federal and State laws and political party practices together comprise the Electoral College system.
