Democratic lawmakers are renewing their calls for passage of legislation that would repeal or more narrowly focus the current open-ended Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) enacted in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Representative Barbara Lee (CA-D), one of those urging total repeal of the AUMF enacted in 2001, said that in the years since its passage, “this authorization has been used as a blank check for military action around the world.” Other Democrats are pushing for Congress to pass an AUMF specific to the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
