Geography The Falkland Islands are anarchipelago of around 700 islands in the South Atlantic, the largest being EastFalkland and West Falkland. They are situatedabout 480 miles northeast of Cape Horn and 300miles from the nearest point on the South American mainland. The Islands have atotal land area of 4,700 square miles — more than half the size of Wales[located in the southwest of Great Britain] — and a permanent population of2,913 (2001 census).
