Established in 1965 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’sWar on Poverty, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)was the beginning of a new era of Federal support for education— especially programs for children in high-poverty communitiesand those at risk of educational failure.Today, ESEA includes programs for safe and drug-free schools,teacher training, magnet schools, education technology, bilingualeducation, and testing.
