Representative Velazquez, of the Twelfth District of New York, was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992. She served on the New York City Council from 1984 to 1986, as Migration Division Office for the Puerto Rico Department of Labor and Human Resources from 1986 to1989, and as Director of the Department of Puerto Rican Community Affairs in the United States for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico from 1989 to 1992.
