Commonly Used Medicare Terms

Assignment — In the original Medicare plan, a doctor who accepts assignment agrees to accept Medicare’s fee as full payment. Basic Benefits — Benefits provided in Medicare Plan A. They are also included in all other standardized Medigap policies. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) — The Federal agency that runs the Medicare program. In addition, CMS works with the States to run the Medicaid program. Copayment — In some Medicare health plans, the amount a beneficiary pays for each medical service, such as a doctor’s visit.
