In order to possess a license for a handgun on private premises in New York City, individuals must pay roughly $400 in fees and undergo a background check. Until July 2019, the city only permitted licensees to transport their handguns to registered gunsmiths and shooting ranges within the city limits. The firearm could not otherwise be moved from the home or business at which it was registered.
